Senior Software Developer (Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.

The University of Cambridge's Information Services is seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer to play a crucial role in the redevelopment of the University's recruitment systems. This 18-month fixed-term position offers the opportunity to lead a significant technical transformation that will benefit the University for years to come.

Our recruitment platform processes an average of 3,000 job postings and 70,000 applications annually, connecting talented individuals with one of the world's leading universities. We're embarking on an 18-month transformation to modernize these critical systems, streamline the recruitment administration process, and build a more robust technical foundation for the future.

We're looking for a motivated and product-minded developer to join a focused 5-person development team within a thriving 60-engineer DevOps function. You'll work closely with other talented developers, product managers, business analysts and directly with members of HR staff across the University, to shape and deliver the technical roadmap for recruitment services within the University.

If you enjoy working directly with stakeholders, observing the outcomes of your work first-hand, and collaborating with different disciplines on shared goals, this is the ideal role for you.

Our technology stack is: Python (Django), Java (Spring), TypeScript (React), Docker, Terraform, GCP. We maintain a DevOps culture and use Scrum for our day to day work. We have also adopted an "open by default" approach to new work and thus you can find much of our work to date in our GitLab. The team also produces a Guidebook that collects team's practices and useful information at https://guidebook.devops.uis.cam.ac.uk/.

We're looking for candidates with experience in:

  • Developing full-stack web applications in Python (Django), and / or Java (Spring or similar).

  • Solving complex business problems as part of a cross-functional, agile team.

  • Using Docker to develop and package applications for deployment.

  • Deploying services into cloud environments.

  • Writing tests as part of day-to-day delivery and ensuring that testing is applied at the appropriate level.

  • Working in a DevOps environment and maintaining CI / CD pipelines.

We value diverse backgrounds and encourage applications from developers who are excited about this challenge, regardless of whether you tick every box.

Our ideal candidate would have:

  • Experience migrating large Java systems to Python.

  • Experience deploying services to Google Cloud Platform using Terraform.

  • The ability to coach and mentor other developers.

  • The ability to act as a solution architect and collaborate with senior stakeholders to inform architectural decisions.
