IT Technician - Assistant Software Engineer (Part Time, Fixed Term)


The Sustainable Innovation Lab (SIL) at the Centre for Human-Inspired Artificial Intelligence (CHIA) is seeking a part time (0.8 FTE) full-stack software engineer assistant experienced with both front-end and back-end software development. This is an exciting opportunity to support the research and teaching activities at SIL through various projects and modules.The role is fixed term until 31 March 2027 in the first instance.

Sustainable Innovation Lab conducts world-leading research to identify, design, and construct pathways to sustainability in the real world. We develop interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to model sustainable behaviours, developing digital technologies, and providing systemic solutions for facilitating sustainable transitions. We work closely with industry and policymakers to co-create the solutions.

The successful candidate has a fantastic opportunity to support the research at SIL across projects and teaching activities. This is an hybrid working position, with amazing benefits, like a defined benefit pension and 36 days including public holidays (pro-rated if part-time). Ideally the role holder will have experience in:

  • Designing and building full-stack software development to support research activities
  • Translate research needs into feasible pathways and reusable solutions through fast iterations
  • Relevant programming languages, such as JavaScript, Python, C++, C, SQL, PHP, Java, HTML, CSS
  • Experience using Cloud services, such as Google and Amazon web services
  • Artificial intelligence, such as natural language processing and graph learning
  • Develop data visualisation tools
  • Working in a cross disciplinary team with economists, computer, environmental, and other scientists

This is a diverse and dynamic role, and the role holder may be asked to undertake other duties as appropriate.
