Research Assistant/Associate in Building Stock Modelling (Fixed Term)


A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on BuildZero.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are:

  • Developing a complete characterisation of the UK building stock
  • Developing dynamic stock and flow tools to explore retrofit requirements and trade-off
  • Liaising and networking with BuildZero research team and industrial partners
  • Planning and organising research and reporting

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

  • Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Engineering or other relevant area
  • Knowledge and experience in: Material flow analysis, environmental assessment, emissions accounting or other topics and tools of Industrial Ecology (essential), Modelling and resource analysis (essential), Use of Python, Matlab or other appropriate programming languages (essential), Familiarity with building and construction (desirable).
  • Collaboration and communication with industrial partners, other research institutes, and colleagues
  • Evidence of potential to produce high-quality research outputs, and experience of developing own models and tools
  • Experience of managing own workload, sticking to deadlines and the ability to constantly update knowledge

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £32,546-£35,116, Research Associate: £37,174-£45,413

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
