Post-Doctoral Research Associate: Battery Interface Characterisation using Scanning Probe Microscopy and Impedance Spectroscopy (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the group of Dr. Svetlana Menkin Bachbut to develop and apply Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM), Scanning Electrochemical Cell Microscopy (SECCM), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The project aims to understand how electrochemical heterogeneity at the electrode¿electrolyte interface contributes to short-circuit formation in batteries.
The successful candidate will use SECM to characterise battery electrode interfaces; therefore, expertise in this field is essential. They will analyse the electrochemical heterogeneity of the interface and elucidate degradation mechanisms related to short circuits. EIS will be used for the early detection of short circuits in lithium-ion and post-lithium batteries, so experience in these areas is also required. Familiarity with cyclic voltammetry, battery assembly, and electrochemical analysis is essential.
The candidate will also utilise a range of characterisation techniques to correlate interface structure with function. Therefore, experience with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is desirable.
The project will involve collaboration with researchers and students, including international partners. Therefore, a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team, along with an aptitude for training and working with students, is essential. The successful applicant will be expected to work with postgraduate students and contribute to their training.
The Menkin Group collaborates closely with the groups of Professor Dame Clare Grey and Professor Dominic Wright at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with members of these groups, be part of the Faraday Institution scientific community, and will be expected to attend consortium meetings (online and in person), where they will occasionally present their results.
Applicants should have (or about to obtain) a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related discipline. A strong proven track-record of publication in relevant fields is essential.
