Research Assistant x 2 - Jackson Group (Fixed Term)
The Steve Jackson laboratory (https://www.stevejacksonlab.org/) at the internationally renowned CRUK Cambridge Institute, https://www.cruk.cam.ac.uk/ (University of Cambridge), is seeking to recruit two bright and enthusiastic Research Assistants.
Postholder 1 will join a small team led by a senior postdoctoral research associate within the Jackson lab. The postholder will conduct high-throughput CRISPR-Cas9 screens to explore sensitivity/resistance mechanisms to various drugs in defined genetic backgrounds, followed by validation and ensuing mechanistic studies. Experience in CRISPR genome editing and/or CRISPR genetic screens preferred, as well as a background in cell and molecular biology, tissue culture, molecular cloning, and stable cell line generation.
Postholder 2 will initially work alongside an experienced postdoctoral research associate to assist with an on-going CRUK RadNet-funded project exploring cellular mechanisms of DNA damage responses and cellular resistance to radiation treatment. Upon the completion of this project, the postholder will continue to work with the postdoc on a Wellcome-funded project defining mutagenic impacts of DNA resection during double-strand break repair. Core duties will involve stable cell line generation, knockout cell line generation using CRISPR/Cas9 technology, routine tissue culture, cloning, immunofluorescence as well as other molecular work.
For further information about post 2 please contact Dr Aldo Bader (aldo.bader@cruk.cam.ac.uk).
Both research assistants will be required to take on other responsibilities, including preparation of reagents, maintenance of lab stocks and assisting in the day-to-day running of the laboratory.
The successful candidates should show initiative and independent thinking, possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and as a part of a vibrant and diverse team
Preferred skills and experience:
- Degree or equivalent in life sciences
- Previous experience of working in a molecular cell biology research laboratory required
- Mammalian tissue culture (including transfection, siRNA work and stable cell line generation).
- Experience in molecular biology techniques: cloning, PCR, mutagenesis, western blotting, immunofluorescence, DNA and RNA isolation and protein analysis.
- Experience in CRISPR genome editing and/or CRISPR genetic screens.
- High attention to detail and good record keeping.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
