Head of Housekeeping / Deputy Custodian


The Department of Chemistry is seeking a confident, approachable, welcoming person with a can-do attitude to fill this key role. The role holder will be responsible for providing a full and comprehensive housekeeping service to all members of the department (approximately 800 people) and visiting personnel and to manage the in-house café staff. To assist them in these tasks the role holder directly line manages 20 staff including 18 cleaners and two Cyber Café staff so excellent management skills are essential. The role holder will also act as a Departmental Fire Officer and will provide front line security of the building including dealing with alarms, plus on occasion assist with reception duties.

Duties will include undertaking line management duties such as training, allocating duties and arranging cover for staff; providing front line security of the building, and dealing with alarms; working closely with the Building Services Manager, undertaking tasks such as obtaining quotes and liaising with contractors and Estate Division..

The successful candidate will be educated to A level standard including GCSE Maths and English / NVQ Level 3 or have an equivalent level of practical experience. Being able to demonstrate a professional, flexible attitude to work is essential, as is having excellent organisational and communication skills. You must also be a 'people person' with the ability to deal with a wide range of people at all levels, have the ability to plan and organise work requirements whilst working under pressure and prioritise daily workloads for both you and your staff. Management experience is essential and having experience of working in a busy role and/or managing cleaning staff is desirable.
