XPS Facility Scientist

Applications are invited for the new position of the X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS) Facility Scientist to lead and further develop the Royce@Cambridge XPS Facility. The Facility consists of two existing XPS instruments housed in the Maxwell Centre, Department of Physics - a state-of-the-art bespoke near-ambient-pressure XPS system from SPECS, and a ThermoFisher ESCALAB 250 Xi system. A third instrument, a new ThermoFisher Nexsa system, is due to be installed and commissioned in 2024 and will be housed in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy to provide the latest workhorse characterisation instrument in the Facility.

The XPS Facility has a large and growing number of existing and new academic and industrial users from around the UK and internationally, with a wide range of experience from complete novices to world-leading experts, covering all aspects of physical sciences, engineering, and biotechnology.

We are seeking a passionate and experienced XPS specialist to lead this Facility, who will:

  • Ensure the highest standard of operation and maintenance of the XPS instruments.

  • Provide training for students, staff, and visitors on the safe and effective use of the Facility.

  • Advise, collaborate with, and advance the research activities of the Facility users.

  • Carry out complex and highly specialist surface analysis and characterisation experiments, optimising experimental parameters and instrument setup, perform advanced data analysis and interpretation.

  • Lead the continued technical and strategic development of the Facility.

Together with the many other advanced shared research facilities in the Maxwell Centre, the Cavendish National Facility, the Royce@Cambridge and the wider West Cambridge Campus, the XPS Facility forms part of a comprehensive platform for interdisciplinary research partnerships between various departments in the Schools of Physical Sciences and Technology in their common pursuit of novel materials and devices, and fundamental, applied, and industrial research. The XPS Facility Scientist will be at the forefront of this expansive collaboration.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record and substantial experience in conducting experimental research using and/or developing the XPS instruments and related techniques. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential to working with a broad user base, and coordinating and delivering a number of parallel on-going research projects.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
