Senior Research Laboratory Technician
A small research group involved in the study of climate change, ocean geochemistry and deep-sea sediments requires a Senior Research Technician. The person appointed would provide highly specialised technical support to this group, other research teams and teaching staff in the Department of Earth Sciences. They would assist in the day to day running of a stable isotope laboratory and research facility consisting of 8 isotope mass spectrometers, cavity ring down spectrometers and other analytical equipment.
The successful applicant would be expected to have some knowledge and experience of mass spectrometry, vacuum systems and preparation techniques for the isotopic analysis of various samples including organic materials, waters and microfossils from deep sea cores. The ability to wet sieve ocean core samples, identify and pick species of foraminifera would be desirable but not essential. The successful applicant would also manage the laboratory archive and data storage system so a knowledge of excel is essential. Applicants should have excellent communication skills, be well organised and flexible in their approach and be able to work on their own initiative. They should have experience of working in a busy research laboratory and be qualified to Degree, HNC or an equivalent level.
