Job Opportunities

Deputy Portfolio Manager

We have an exciting opportunity for a Deputy Portfolio Manager to join University Information Services (UIS) supporting our Education and Infrastructure IT portfolios. The position is based in the Delivery Management Office, which works across UIS and with stakeholders across the University of Cambridge to deliver high-quality IT and digital services.

You will be an experienced programme and project professional, with excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships with colleagues at all levels of an organisation. You will be able to take a pragmatic approach, balancing the need for appropriate governance and structure with the ability to empower teams to deliver. You will thrive in complexity and will enjoying bringing clarity to work through your analytical and problem-solving skills. Prior experience of portfolio management is desirable but not essential, and this role could represent an excellent opportunity for a candidate looking to develop their skills in portfolio management.

Cambridge is a complex environment with a highly devolved organisational structure, and you'll be adept at influencing and problem solving in a consensus-based organisation where successful outcomes are as dependent on organisational support and change as on the technology that UIS delivers.

This is a new role reporting to the current Portfolio Manager (Education and Infrastructure) and will cover a range of activity, such as clarifying and prioritising portfolio work, setting up new work for success and delivery troubleshooting.

We offer an excellent benefits package, including 41 days annual leave (including public holidays). We are still working mainly from home, and so are open to applicants who live outside Cambridge but are willing to travel regularly to Cambridge.

About Portfolio Management at UIS

The University has four IT portfolios:

  • Research (Widely used services to support research operations, research intelligence, libraries and collections and the research community)
  • Business Systems (Services to underpin the University's professional services - finance, HR, legal, estates and other areas).
  • Infrastructure (Provision of utility IT services that are generic and provided as a commodity).

Each portfolio is owned by a portfolio owner, a senior member of the University accountable for that area. Portfolio Managers are responsible for working with portfolio owners and other key University staff to ensure that University priorities for UIS are clear and agreed, and that work is scheduled and delivered accordingly within our resource capacity.
