Research Associate in Atomic Physics and Solar Physics (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in the astrophysics group, Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Del Zanna on a range of topics, to improve our understanding of the solar transition region and corona, by combining advanced models with new observations. The first is to make advanced atomic models of the solar transition region and corona available to the community. The second is to further develop the models and apply them to observations (e.g. SoHO/CDS and Solar Orbiter SPICE in the EUV and DKIST in the near infrared) to measure the physical state of the plasma and improve our understanding of the formation of the main spectral lines. The third is to develop improved models and apply to Hinode EIS observations to measure the coronal magnetic field.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in a relevant area of solar physics or atomic physics, and have an established track record of original research and experience of working collaboratively. Previous experience in atomic modelling and/or spectral diagnostics is important. Some knowledge of IDL/Python programming would also be advantageous. A background knowledge in atomic physics is desirable.

Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research projects. You will be expected to plan and manage your own research and administration, with guidance from academic staff. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. You may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area and participate to the outreach activities of the astrophysics group.

The position is available from 1 April 2023, with a flexible starting date (possibly earlier, otherwise after within a few months).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
