EPSRC FIBE2 CDT PhD studentship with MTC: Domestic retrofit as a challenge of high volume manufacturing

This is a four-year (1+3 MRes/PhD) studentship funded through the Cambridge EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Resilience in a Changing World (FIBE2 CDT). The FIBE2 CDT aims to develop the next generation of infrastructure professionals who can create, shape and deliver the national vision for UK infrastructure, who will be equipped with a versatile and cross-disciplinary skill set to meet the most complex emerging challenges and contribute effectively to better infrastructure decision-making in the UK. Further details can be found at https://www.fibe-cdt.eng.cam.ac.uk/

The full-time project is funded in collaboration with MTC. The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry. This has been extended to cover not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.

Project Details: All of the UK's 28 million homes must be retrofitted to the highest levels of energy performance in the 28 years remaining to deliver the UK's legal commitment to zero emissions. A small number of expensive and slow one-off projects have demonstrated that this can be done, with Victorian buildings retrofitted to performance near to thatof new Passiv Houses. However the costs of these projects has been very high and they have taken a long time. Converting from expensive one-off delivery to mass market coverage requires that we deploy the design and production skills and technologies of contemporary manufacturing to the practices of one-off small-scale construction.

We are recruiting two PhDs to work together on retrofit. This studentship is focused on manufacturing and installation, covering the speed and cost of producing all required components of a retrofit, and every feature of installation, aiming at a complete project time of two weeks per house. Informal enquires about this post can be made to Prof Julian Allwood (jma42@cam.ac.uk ).
