Clinical Research Fellow (Fixed Term)

This post represents an excellent opportunity for a medically qualified trainee with an interest in oncology, endocrinology or metabolism to join a multidisciplinary team of clinical and basic scientists investigating the metabolic, neuroendocrine and immunological changes that occur in cancer cachexia.

The post-holder will play a key role in undertaking bespoke human phenotyping using facilities on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. These will include studies of food intake and energy expenditure and fMRI neuroimaging, with involvement in molecular and immunological laboratory analysis.

The successful individual will ideally have some previous research experience. The successful individual will have a prominent role in the management of patients with systematic chronic disease and/or oncological malignancy. They will also have the opportunity to design and develop upcoming projects that undertake an experimental medicine approach to understanding the metabolic and neuroendocrine effects of hormones relevant to cancer cachexia. Involvement in translational work related to cachexia in cancer patients will also be expected.

A knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is expected and other trial specific training will be provided. There will also be the opportunity to attend other trial design related training opportunities and to present clinical data at national and international meetings.

The post will be held in the Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science under the direction of Dr Tony Coll but with close working links with colleagues in Oncology and Psychiatry.

The post is supported by the CANcer Cachexia Action Network ("CANCAN") group, a US/UK consortium funded by Cancer Grand Challenges (Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute in the US).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 5 years in the first instance.
