Research Assistant/Associate (Fixed Term)

The University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a Research Fellow (Research Associate or Research Assistant) at the Centre for Business Research, to work on a project exploring employment regulation and the digitalisation of work.

The post-holder's principal role will be to carry out statistical analysis of the CBR Leximetric Datasets. The Datasets provide a unique time series, tracking changes in labour, company and insolvency law over the period since the 1970s, for a large sample of countries. The coding of legal data is carried out using a so-called leximetric methodology developed in the CBR. See

The post-holder will work with members of the CBR to develop and apply statistical techniques for analysing the Datasets. The research will explore the economic and social impact of changes in employment regulation, with a focus on laws affecting platform and gig work.

Funding for the post has been made available via the ESRC, through its support for the Digital Futures at Work Research Centre (

The successful applicant will have completed an M.Phil. or have equivalent advanced research experience, including doctoral level research, in a quantitative social science, computer science, or digital humanities discipline. Familiarity with time series and panel data econometrics will be essential, and knowledge of machine learning and natural language processing would be desirable.

The post-holder should be committed to delivering high quality research outputs and be capable of exercising initiative and demonstrating good time management and planning skills. They should have an interest in the role of institutions in social and economic change and in the methodology of applied social science research.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). An applicant who has submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

The salary will be in the range £27,929 - £32,348 at Research Assistant level and in the range £34,308 - £42,155 at Research Associate level.
