MRC Programme Leader Track


The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions. Our focus is to deliver new analytical and computational strategies based on sound statistical principles for the challenging tasks facing biomedicine and public health.

We are now seeking to make an appointment at Programme Leader-track level to complement the Unit's established research portfolio. This position is aimed at an ambitious researcher who is ready to take the next step towards becoming a Principal Investigator by developing an independent scientific programme in the broad topic of population health sciences.

Applicants should have an exciting portfolio of population health research and clearly demonstrate the strategic awareness to develop their programme into one with an international track record of relevant independent research with 5-6 years. Examples area of interest include: mathematical/statistical infectious disease modelling, causal inference for public health, statistical methods for data fusion across types and scales; pathogen genomics for public health.

The successful applicant will be given the resources and support to establish a new group, with the expectation of an accelerated personal and career development towards Programme Leader/Principal Research Associate level within 5-6 years. The support package includes funding for a research associate position, in addition to research operating costs and set-up funding. They will also have the opportunity to attract bright and enthusiastic PhD students with access to the Unit's established fully funded PhD programme, while postdoctoral group staff will benefit from the University of Cambridge's extensive career development training portfolio.

The successful candidate will have no responsibility for undergraduate teaching as the Biostatistics Unit is exclusively research orientated. Core-funding from the Medical Research Council gives long-term support for ambitious projects, ensuring that staff can focus on their research. However, the post does provide the opportunity to teach at Master's level and develop/contribute to short courses aimed at fellow researchers and professionals in industry.

The Unit is situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of the world's most vibrant centres of biomedical research, which includes the University of Cambridge's Clinical School, two major hospitals, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the world headquarters of Astra Zeneca. The new group will also have access to the excellent infrastructure and opportunities for integrating their research in the University of Cambridge.
