System Support Technician (Fixed Term)

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is seeking to appoint a System Support Technician to play an important role in providing technical support serviced to users of the Unit's computer services.

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is a department within the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge and studies the genetic, developmental and environmental factors causing obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders. The Unit has developed and maintains its own bespoke IT infrastructure and services. These are tailored to the needs of the Unit and are critical for the delivery of its scientific mission

The Unit IT Team provides computing facilities for approximately 200 staff, students and visiting fellows located across four main sites. The team provides technical support services to the user base, the main components of which are: business services, remote site support, networking, private network management, scientific compute and storage.

The post-holder will work closely with an established System Support Technician. They will provide face to face and remote technical assistance to users of the department and second line systems support for IT systems. The role provides a first line support function for the IT Team completing system build and configuration tasks, on-site support visits and resolving technical problems.

The successful candidate will have good knowledge of desktop computer hardware and software, experience of supporting PCs, laptops, printers and other peripherals as well as experience in the administration and support of Windows 10 for clients and Microsoft Office applications. Excellent communications skills are critical for the role. The role holder must have a helpful and positive manner, be able to communicate clearly on a wide range of technical issues with people
