Senior Software Developer (Drupal) (Fixed Term)

An opportunity has become available at the University of Cambridge's Information Services Division for an experienced and flexible Senior Software Developer (Drupal) to join our well-established and highly regarded team, providing content management system services across the University.

The University of Cambridge is in the middle of a five year Digital Presence Programme, looking at all aspects of how we deliver websites. The successful applicant has a fantastic opportunity to help build and shape the next generation of Cambridge University Drupal websites. They will also be involved in supporting our existing substantial portfolio of over 500 websites, working with customers across all parts of the University.

We are looking for someone who would embrace this exciting and challenging opportunity to make a difference to the whole of the Cambridge University online community, from prospective and existing students through to staff of all kinds.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work within our team to develop the next generation of Cambridge University Drupal websites.
  • Be part of delivering an excellent Content Management System service across the University.
  • Help support our diverse customer base with their support and training needs.
  • Be capable of managing individual website projects independently.
  • Engage with the wider Drupal.org community where needed to help solve issues and share expertise.
  • Stay up-to-date with exciting future relevant and related modules and technologies that could enhance our offerings.
  • Work closely with people across the department and other parts of the University including Developers, Infrastructure teams, Networks engineers, Security staff, Computer Officers, Comms and Marketing teams, Project managers and service teams.
  • Monitor, diagnose and proactively fix issues

Skills

You must have demonstrable experience working with the following products and technologies, and have the following skills:

  • Drupal (Versions 9 / 7), Site Building and Module Development
  • PHP
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • End-to-end system lifecycle experience
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work in an Agile way with a number of multidisciplinary teams (Developers, BA, UX, Content Design, UI Design, SEO) to achieve project results.
  • Have experience of, and be comfortable with, interacting with a variety of customers.
  • Comfortable finding solutions across technology boundaries.
  • A Degree or equivalent work experience.

In addition we are interested in applicants with Frontend or DevOps skills (or both), and it would be advantageous for applicants to have experience in some of the following:

Front End Skills

  • Drupal theming, HTML, CSS frameworks (Bootstrap / Material), JavaScript and JS frameworks (especially Gatsby and React)

DevOps / Further Development Skills

  • Linux Sysadmin skills, Caching technologies (e.g. Varnish), Database admin skills (MySQL / Maria / Postgres), Version control (Git), Continuous integration, Configuration management

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
