Departmental Safety Manager

The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy is one of the best-performing research and teaching departments in the University. As Departmental Safety Manager, you will assist senior management to ensure the department is a safe place capable of sustaining successful research by providing guidance on general, laser, biological and chemical safety matters. The role has significant impact on all of the activities, processes and systems including the activities of approximately 30 Academic Staff, 58 Professional Service Staff, 80 Postdoctoral Researchers and 150 Postgraduate students.

The role holder will be the first point of contact for all safety related matters. You will oversee the dissemination of health and safety information, provide technical safety support, advice and guidance to all staff in the department, and develop and update documentation and guidance associated with Health and Safety. As it is critical that such information is accurate and effective, we are looking for someone with a keen eye for detail and excellent communication skills. You will be confident interacting with a wide range of academics, research staff, students, professional service staff and contractors to ensure health and safety standards and procedures are maintained and followed at all times. You will also be good at problem-solving, be able to work under pressure and adapt to changing demands, as well as having the ability to work as part of a team but to take the lead where necessary.

The successful applicant will be educated to post graduate degree level or equivalent, having significant experience of working within a research environment. They will have demonstrable knowledge of health and safety regulations, including practical experience of managing all aspects of H&S, experience of delivering training and an understanding of how to successfully merge good safety practice with good research. The role holder will represent the Institute at any University safety/compliance activity or events. The successful applicant will themselves be required to attend all mandatory training provided by the University to fulfil these responsibilities as required and training in more specialised areas will be provided.
