Research Computing Systems Specialist


The Research Computing Service (RCS) at the University of Cambridge has an exciting opportunity for an excellent candidate to join the Research Computing User Services team as a Research Computing Systems Specialist. RCS provides one of the largest High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters in the UK, Large scale HPC storage, and OpenStack cloud infrastructure and other services for researchers from within Cambridge and other UK Universities and industry. The successful applicant will join a growing team responsible for supporting, developing and maintaining these UK-leading services to facilitate research across a wide range of disciplines. As a member of RCS you will have the opportunity to actively contribute to the design and delivery of new services and other cutting edge projects.

The successful candidate will have hands on experience with deploying and managing infrastructure as code, will be proficient in Linux operating system and familiar with key network concepts.

The main duties will include maintaining Openstack cloud infrastructure and supporting service delivery as well as improving reliability and availability security and performance. The key skills include scripting in Bash or Python, Ansible configuration management, Terraform and version control.

Experience of HPC would be advantageous; the motivation and enthusiasm to learn new skills and new technologies are essential. Our user base includes academic and industrial users and you must have the ability to deal with a varied level of user experience and have good communication skills.
