Research Associate/Research Assistant - Bioinformatician (Fixed Term)


We are seeking a talented bioinformatician to work on the analysis of genetic data within the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology. The projects will include the bioinformatic analysis of germline and tumour sequencing data arising from large epidemiological studies of breast cancer, and from projects in early detection of breast and ovarian cancer.

This post is based in the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology, which forms part of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care. The Centre carries out research into inherited susceptibility to common cancers and conducts significant large-scale analyses both within the Centre and as part of ongoing collaborations.

Applicants should have a PhD in bioinformatics, statistics or a related scientific discipline or have an equivalent level of professional qualifications or experience. Previous experience of working with next generation sequence data would be a strong advantage. Experience of programming in R, and a sound knowledge of Perl or Python, would also be desirable. The ability to work well in a team environment will be essential.

*Appointment at Research Associate is dependent on having a PhD, including those who have submitted but not received their PhD. Where a PhD has yet to be awarded or submitted appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded. If an individual has not submitted a PhD or is not working towards one they could be appointed as a Research Assistant if they have either a degree (degree and/or Master's) in a relevant area or equivalent experience.

The position is full time and the funds are available for this post until 30 September 2023.

Location: Department of Public Health and Primary Care, Strangeways Research Laboratory, Worts Causeway, Cambridge CB1 8RN (approx 2 miles south of city centre).
