Programme Manager - Royce Institute Cambridge (Fixed Term)


Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

This three-year, full time academic-related position will be responsible for developing, supporting and managing all aspects of the operational activities of the Henry Royce Institute Facilities (Royce) based in Cambridge, and a range of UK-wide cross-disciplinary activities in the area of advanced materials research.

The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) is the UK's national materials science institute. Operating with its Hub at The University of Manchester, Royce is a Partnership of nine leading institutions ¿ the universities of Cambridge, Imperial College London, Liverpool, Leeds, Oxford, Sheffield, the National Nuclear Laboratory, and UKAEA.

Royce coordinates over £300 million of facilities, providing a joined-up framework that can deliver beyond the current capabilities of individual Partners or research teams.

Royce supports world-recognised excellence in UK materials research, accelerating commercial exploitation of innovations and delivering positive economic and societal impact for the UK:

  • Providing access to the latest facilities and capability
  • Enabling national materials research foresighting, collaboration and strategy
  • Catalysing industrial collaboration and exploitation of materials research
  • Fostering materials science skills development, innovation training and outreach

Educated at least to degree level in a science discipline within Physical Sciences and Technology areas, the successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate experience in managing research projects on a scientific and/or financial level, or advising those who manage major research projects. A clear understanding of the organisational culture of a large research-intensive university (or similar type of large research organisation) will be essential.

In particular we will be looking for experience in developing effective relationships with external agencies and internal staff to influence direction of research. If you have successfully carried out an administrative project management role or roles, preferably in a research-related role in a university environment, especially if it involved drafting complex documents, preparing funding bids and managing budgets, we would be interested in hearing from you.

The role will be based in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy and the Maxwell Centre, and will work closely with the Director of the Henry Royce Institute Facilities at Cambridge.
