Research Computing Security Specialist

The Research Computing Service (RCS) at the University of Cambridge has an exciting opportunity for an excellent candidate to join the division as a Research Computing Security Specialist.

RCS provides one of the largest High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters in the UK, large scale HPC storage and an OpenStack cloud infrastructure which underpin a range of services for researchers from within Cambridge and other UK Universities and industry.

The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Implementing security best practices across research computing platforms and services.
  • Maintaining the Information Security Management System (ISMS) in accordance with ISO27001 standards.
  • Promoting and raising awareness of security best practices and ISMS.
  • Performing risk assessments.
  • Implementing and maintaining security patching strategy.
  • Maintaining security monitoring and alerting tools.

Essential skills include:

  • Experience with developing, implementing and maintaining security policies and procedures.
  • Practical and proven knowledge of security administration of Linux servers, network and storage.
  • Experience with monitoring security on a large scale system.
  • Experience with conducting security investigations of compromised accounts or systems.

Desirable skills include:

  • Shell scripting and practical knowledge of high level programming or scripting languages such as Python or Bash.
  • Experience of implementing authentication and authorisation solutions, including multi factor authentication.
  • Experience with ISO27001 or other security frameworks.

The role holder will also need to be proactive, creative and comfortable resolving complex problems. We are looking for candidates that are passionate about information systems security and would like to develop their career in this area. We can provide the relevant training to support this role.
