Research Associate (Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 June 2023 in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position, available from 1 January 2021 or as soon as possible after this date, funded by an Academia-Industry collaboration, on a project aiming to the development of vaccines against meningococcus and gonococcus. The project is part of a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and AchilleS Vaccines, an innovative company within the Siena vaccine hub in Italy.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated scientist with passion for vaccine research and a strong drive towards improving public health worldwide.

The main focus of the research at Cambridge, led by Dr Pietro Mastroeni, is to carry out construction and preclinical testing of vaccine candidates against meningitis and gonorrhoea.

Applicants should have a PhD in Microbiology or a related discipline. Experience and track record in molecular microbiology is essential, preferably applied to Neisseria species. Applicants must have experience in molecular cloning, next generation sequencing, bioinformatics, data analysis, immunology, molecular purification, and molecular analytic techniques. Experience in pathogen handling and work at BSL2 is essential and preferably also BSL3 containment levels. Experience and track record in animal models of infection will be advantageous. The successful applicant will have familiarity with compiling and maintaining laboratory safety documentation according to UK law. The candidate must have good administrative and interpersonal skills, advanced knowledge of English, ability to work in complex projects, attitude and ability to work both independently and with others and to supervise technical staff. The project may involve travel and work for short periods of time between the UK and Italy. Vaccination against Neisseria meningitidis group B and non-B strains will be necessary before or immediately after employment.
