MRes + PhD (4 years) Nanoscience & Nanotechnology x 12 (Fixed Term)

The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (NanoDTC, at the University of Cambridge invites applications from top-class independent-thinking students for its multidisciplinary MRes + PhD programme in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. We welcome applicants from across Physical Sciences including Chemistry, Physics, Materials and Engineering. Applicants will be shortlisted based on their written applications, taking into account qualifications, aspirations and experience. Final selection will be done via an interview process which focusses on candidates' independent thinking approach in physical sciences, in addition to their knowledge, aspirations and experience.

About the programme: We provide bespoke training in key areas of Nano, to translate exploratory nanoscience into impactful technologies, and to stimulate new interdisciplinary interactions in Nanoscience. The MRes year provides high-quality advanced-level training through lecture courses, hands-on practicals and two 8-week and one 13-week long experimental projects, prior to final selection of interdisciplinary PhD research projects between two research groups in the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials or another relevant department across the University.

A significant element of the MRes training and beyond is a focus on innovation and industry engagement, including courses on Nurturing and Managing Innovation in Science, System Design aspects of nanomaterials and devices, and opportunities to transition academic research to higher TRL levels and commercial applications through the Translational Prize scheme. A key overarching research theme in our interdisciplinary research centre is understanding and control of the nano-interfaces connecting complex architectures ¿ we focus on understanding and measurement of nano-interfaces, controlling nano-interfaces in a scalable manner across size scales, and integrating them into application systems using engineering approaches. In terms of application areas, research within the CDT is clustered into four broad themes: ¿ Energy Materials: Photovoltaics, Batteries, Supercapacitors, Electrolysis, CO2 Utilisation, Solar fuels, Photocatalysis ¿ Sustainable Nano: Functional Nanomaterials, Green Processes, Efficient Nano-Assembly ¿ Nano Biotechnologies: Cellular Imaging, Sensing, Targeting of disease, Microfluidics, Scaffolds ¿ Nano electronics / Photonics: Graphene, Organic electronics, Spintronics, Piezoelectrics, Nanophotonics Funding Information: UK and Irish applicants: Full funding (fees + maintenance) UKRI studentships are available to UK and Irish students who are accepted on to our MRes+PhD programme. Irish students are eligible for full studentships under the recent eligibility announcement by UKRI ( UK and Irish students are also considered for the University based funding sources mentioned below, in addition to UKRI funding. Other EU (non-Irish) and Overseas applicants will be considered for partial funding from UKRI as part of their application. A large number of additional funding sources are available to EU and Overseas students. These include, but are not limited to competitive scholarship programmes such as the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, Winton Scholarships and other University based scholarships, as well as funding from NanoDTC industry partners. Applicants should have, or be expecting to graduate with, the equivalent of a high UK three-year bachelor's (honours) degree (equivalent to a UK First class honours (1st) or a UK Second class honours, upper division (2.i) in a relevant science or engineering discipline).
