We invite applications for a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher (MSC-ESR) Fellowship to work with Prof Sir Richard Friend on the project titled 'Development of spin-OLETs for optimized performance in light-emitting, transistors and organic photovoltaic technologies'.
The project will form part of a H2020 MSCA Innovative Training Network for the research on Chiro-Optical Devices. Helical Systems for Chiral Organic Light Emitting Diodes (HEL4CHIROLED) Project combines the expertise on the chirality domain of different research groups and unites eleven partner organisations from both the academic and industrial sectors from seven countries (United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Israel, and Greece). In the HEL4CHIROLED project, the principal research goal is the preparation of chiral Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Organic Light-Emissive Transistors (OLETs) based on new small helical molecules, helical pi-conjugated oligomers, and helical lanthanide complexes.
Such knowledge will provide a paradigm shift in OLED technologies, developing new material sets and approaches that take advantage of i) the Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) effect for improved performance in OLEDs, ii) the emission of circularly polarized light (CPL) to improve the performance of displays based on OLEDs, and iii) to allow for additional functionality stereoscopic displays, enhanced bandwidth optical communication, etc. Efficient circularly polarized (CP) emissive OLEDs and OLETs and Spin Selective devices (Spin-OLEDs and Spin-OLETs) are targeted.
The research in Cambridge will be directed to the design, fabrication and opto-electronic measurement of semiconductor structures and devices such as OLEDs, using facilities already established. The project will integrate closely with the broad Cambridge research programme in the area of organic electronics.

The skills, qualifications and experience required for the role: i) the applicants should have (or expect to obtain) at least the equivalent of a UK upper second class honours degree (and preferably a Master's degree) in Physics, or other relevant scientific discipline; ii) high proficiency in spoken and written English; iii) excellent communication and organizational skills; iv) relevant research experience is desirable.
Applicants must satisfy the EC's eligibility requirements for MSC-ESR Fellowships and at the time of recruitment must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the last three years immediately prior to the reference date. At the time of recruitment, applicants must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. They must be willing and able to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment, participating in secondments at complementary partner institutions, and training events.
The selected candidate will receive a 36-month, full-time employment contract as per Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) regulations for early stage researchers. The Fellowship will provide a salary that includes a living allowance of around €40,000 per annum plus a mobility allowance of around €6,425 p.a.
The Fellowship is offered in conjunction with a PhD position, subject to the Fellow satisfying the University's admissions requirements for PhD study.
