Applications are now invited for a Principal Technician (Robotics) to support the work for both the Centre of Doctoral Training on Agri-Food Robotics (AgriFoRwArdS CDT) and the Human Machine Observatory, based at the Department of Engineering's main site in Trumpington Street.
The University of Cambridge is launching a new EPSRC Centre of Doctoral Training on Agri-Food Robotics (AgriFoRwArdS CDT) in collaboration with the University of Lincoln and the University of East Anglia. The Centre is supported by £10 million investment by government, industry and the universities to develop an international centre of excellence for Agri-Food Robotics research. The Observatory for Human-Machine Collaboration is the new initiative for interdisciplinary and inter-departmental research supported by the University. We aim to establish a co-creation shared lab space to foster high-impact research in human-machine collaboration.
The successful candidate will work closely with a team of researchers and will be responsible for developing and delivering highly specialist control techniques. This will involve working with others to deliver and design experiments; manufacture, develop and design robotic handling grips and manipulators, a knowledge of 3D printers, to be able construct bespoke test environments; setting up and advising on experimental procedures. Assisting with the installation of robots in off-site environments and production areas. The role-holder will prepare protocols, SOP, RAMS and user guides.
As part of this, the candidate will ideally be experienced in instrumentation and monitoring systems, data acquisition, e.g. Python, Matlab with a knowledge of Fanuc G code, have a desire to try new things, to find out what works (and what doesn't) and to learn quickly on the job, are essential skills.
The candidate will also provide training, guidance and specialist advice on laboratory techniques and safe systems of work to students, staff or external visitors who will use this facility to conduct research. This will also include oversight for ensuring that appropriate safety procedures are followed in the laboratory.
Applicants should be educated to HNC/Degree in IT or Engineering or have completed a recognised apprenticeship in an engineering discipline. Good organisational and communication skills are essential, together with the ability to understand and explain diverse technical and design problems to staff and students.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
