The Clinical School Computing Service (CSCS) is looking for an experienced and motivated engineer to develop, manage and support our virtual and physical network infrastructure systems. You will be a part of a Network Team of 4, and a larger Infrastructure Team of 9.
The network comprises 250 switches across the Biomedical Campus and 6 other sites, with 2 data centres supporting 300 servers, an 800TB Storage Area Network and an ISO 27001:2013 certified Information Security Management System to 4500 endpoints.
With your colleagues you will manage the network including Access, Aggregate, Core and Storage Area Network switches, as well as next generation firewalls; ensuring they are secure, resilient and meet service demand. You will engage in incident and problem management; diagnosing, resolving and recovering from incidents to maintain department service uptime targets and initiating problem investigations. In addition, you will participate using change management to enterprise network systems, planning, evaluating risk and peer reviewing other's changes.
The Biomedical Campus is a busy site with frequent building projects; you will engage with customers at a variety of levels to understand their requirements, turning them into project specifications for implementation by the team (including you) and its suppliers. You will monitor the quality of work by contractors, and report to building committees on progress.
We encourage staff to be creative in finding ways to improve existing services and develop new services. Examples of upcoming projects include automated switch management, full active-active resilience between our data centres and network access control.
Applicants are expected to hold a degree in a relevant subject, or demonstrable skills and track record of supporting, managing and maintaining enterprise IT systems. We are looking for applicants who can work confidently in two of the following areas:
- Campus networks spanning multiple sites to provide Data and VoIP services
- Switching, esp VLANs, trunks, port aggregation, STP, Stackwise
- Dynamic Routing Protocols
- Firewall configuration
In addition, experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous but is not essential as full training will be provided: Cisco configuration in iOS, nxOS; Fortinet Technologies, especially, Fortigate, Fortiweb and Fortimail; configuring client VPNs or site-to-site VPNs; 802.1x implementation or other forms of Network Access Control; switch management platforms e.g. Ansible and Cisco Prime; working on-site within server rooms; WAP management, installations, surveys; using virtualisation to deliver proof-of-concept designs or testing; working with customers and suppliers in the delivery of building projects, and ability to automate tasks using PowerShell, Python or other languages.
You will be part of a collaborative team consisting of both system/storage and network engineers, and work closely with our Support, Development and Project Teams. CSCS values enthusiasm and interest in working as part of multi-functional team and this will be a key part of this role.
