The Faculty of Mathematics has an exciting opportunity for a Technical Lead to join our IT team. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with and developing teams. The role holder will lead the design and delivery of infrastructure to support world-class research within our welcoming and friendly environment.
You will be providing technical leadership, focused on the delivery of high-quality, sustainable and reliable IT systems (server, storage and network) which underpin the research efforts of mathematicians across both the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. As one of the senior members of the IT team, you will be working closely with the IT Manager to develop and deliver the Faculty's 3-year IT strategy.
Working with colleagues from the IT Team and more widely across the Faculty, you will play an integral part in planning, designing, implementing and evolving our IT services. Key responsibilities include taking a technical lead on multiple projects which currently include: upgrading existing departmental authorisation services, developing the potential of new centrally-provided file services and simplifying network access within the Faculty. Your general duties will cover managing many of the Faculty's infrastructure services (running on Linux), offering technical and project consultancy, and offering assistance and advice to colleagues working on the solution of technically complex or time-consuming helpdesk requests.
Our infrastructure is based around on-premises virtualisation systems, and is currently in a phase of consolidating novel solutions into streamlined, maintainable and supportable systems offering value to the institution.
The successful candidate will have a University degree in a numerate subject (or equivalent combinations of education and experience), with a proven ability at managing servers (Linux, mostly Ubuntu), managing computer infrastructure for desktops (predominantly Linux and Windows), knowledge of diverse network protocols (such as TCP/IP, DNS, RADIUS, HTTP), and use of configuration management systems (ideally ansible).
You will have experience of providing technical support within a large-scale and service-oriented IT environment employing enterprise grade Network, Server and Storage infrastructure. You will be able to demonstrate a good blend of technical, influencing and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with Faculty colleagues who have a wide range of technical abilities.
