Research Assistant/Associate - Systems & Security Engineering (Fixed Term)

Research Assistant £26,243 - £30,395 or Research Associate £32,236 - £39,609

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years.

A position is available to join a growing team in tackling issues of accountability regarding emerging technologies.

The role is to work on technical means that assist systems/data security, privacy, trust, audit, explainability, management and control in distributed environments (such as the Internet of Things, automated/ML-driven systems, etc).

The position is part of the Compliant & Accountable Systems group, an interdisciplinary research team that looks at better aligning technology with legal concerns. From the technical aspect this includes designing and building mechanisms for improving transparency, trust and control.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate in a range of academic projects, and drive research directions. A key activity of this role is prototyping ideas and experimenting, so strong programming skills are required. Such work might entail building low-level OS tools and access control regimes, working with various development frameworks, integrating applications with cloud services, and possibly app development. As such, a willingness to learn and work with a broad set of technologies is important.

Applicants should be self-motivated, and some interest in the broader (social/user) impacts of technology is desirable. Applicants for the Research Associate (post-doc) appointments should demonstrate a strong research background.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Jat Singh (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~js573). Note that appointment as a Research Associate is dependent of having a PhD (or equivalent experience). Where a PhD has yet to be awarded, appointment will initially be made as a Research Assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded.

There is some flexibility in start dates, though the sooner the better.
