Outstanding applicants are sought for the post of Research Assistant/Associate in modular design for underground construction in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. The successful candidate will carry out research on off-site underground construction, aimed at developing a methodology to design modular base slabs for basements in overconsolidated clays.
The post holder will be located in the new Civil Engineering Building, West Cambridge, UK.
The key responsibilities and duties are: collecting, processing, and interpreting data on construction activities and soil response from selected basement projects; developing guidelines to specify tests in the site investigation to provide meaningful soil parameters for the numerical analyses; establishing a robust process for numerical analysis of basement construction, to address base heave and swelling pressure; demonstrating viability of the modular base slab approach through calibrated numerical simulations and developing initial outline of the design process; writing project reports and research publications, and attending conferences.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: - Having obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in geotechnical engineering or related subject - Ability to carry out finite element analyses of geo-mechanical problems - Knowledge on instrumentation, data acquisition and data interpretation in geotechnical engineering - Background in field/laboratory experimental work for soil characterisation - Good verbal and non-verbal communication skills - Good time management skills - A strong work ethic and a positive attitude - A track record of authoring high quality academic publications
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,715 - £30,942 Research Associate: £32,816 - £40,322
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 June 2021 in the first instance.
