A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on the EPSRC funded project "Digital Manufacturing on a Shoestring", focussing on the area of condition monitoring and maintenance solutions and fault detection as well as contributing to the broader aims of the project. The post holder will work with the Distributed Information and Automation Laboratory (DIAL) at the Institute for Manufacturing.
The researcher will contribute to the development of industrial SME requirements, and will focus on design and implementation of methods for low cost sensing and predictive maintenance solutions. In addition, the researcher shall contribute broadly to the Shoestring project activities as well as to other research projects and activities within DIAL.
Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Manufacturing, Computer Science, or relevant discipline. The researcher's expertise should include condition monitoring, fault diagnosis and prognosis, predictive maintenance and sensor integration. Experience in setting up condition-monitoring test rigs in a lab or industrial environment will be particularly advantageous. Appreciation and knowledge of the methods for programming of low cost devices would be helpful. Experience relevant to following topics will be appreciated: industrial information architectures, low cost computing, predictive data analytics, machine learning.
As the project requires active engagement with a number of industrial partners, the researcher will be expected to have very good communication and writing skills. Finally, the researcher is expected to have the ability to facilitate student development activities.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
The post holder will be located in West Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,715 - £30,942 Research Associate: £32,816 - £40,322
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2021 in the first instance.
