The Wellcome/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute, renowned for its research in developmental biology and cancer, is seeking a new Administration and Operations Manager.
This is the most senior professional services post in the organisation and provides an exciting opportunity to work in a large, complex and welcoming research Institute with an exceptional record in world-class research.
As Administration and Operations Manager, the role-holder will directly supervise 8 heads of section and will have overall responsibility for all professional services staff (c.40) who deliver key services in HR, finance, research support, buildings and facilities, internal and external communications, compliance and other operational areas. The role-holder will advise the Institute Director and other senior academic staff on strategy, planning and policy issues. The role also requires collaboration with departments in the School of the Biological Sciences and with the University's central administration.
The varied and challenging role of Administration and Operations Manager requires high-level experience of managing people and budgets as well as the ability to communicate effectively, to oversee complex projects and to solve problems. This role has delegated authority from the Director to deal with HR matters, monitor the Institute's core grants (circa £4 million per annum) and oversee all financial matters. The successful candidate will have significant senior management experience in an academic research environment, including an understanding of research grants and managing finances and resources. They will also be flexible and creative in response to challenges, be able to make and implement decisions to complex problems, and have excellent skills in team working and collaboration.
