Business Manager (Use Less Group) (Maternity Cover)


A position exists for an experienced Business Manager, based in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Division in Central Cambridge, who will work with and support the project tasks of the Use Less Group, and its recently awarded UK FIRES Programme Grant, under the direct supervision of the Group Director, liaising with the project manager, as required.

The Mission of the Use Less Group is to promote a transition towards a more sustainable future in which we use less resource by developing new technologies, systems and policies for the manufacturing of resource intensive products across multiple sectors. The technology, system and policy changes we are pursuing are practical but their delivery requires the group to mature and expand its impacts in industry and policy over the years, placing more resources in areas where industrial and political exploitation is more likely.

We wish to appoint a professional who operates in the broad areas of industrial resource efficiency and will be familiar with the intellectual assets developed by the Use Less Group relevant for these application domains. The Business Manager will be expected to seek opportunities and develop collaborations with industry and policy to maximize impact and exploit the technology, system and strategic capabilities developed by the University and the consortium partners. A key element of the role is to communicate business needs and market drivers from the industry consortium and the external stakeholders to the Use Less Group partners concerned.

The successful applicant will hold a degree level qualification in a scientific or technical subject relevant to the role's remit, at PhD Level or equivalent. Significant experience in dealing with new product and/or process development is required. Experience of project management and strategy development, licensing or other aspects of knowledge transfer, experience in new business development and in establishing B2B or academic industry collaborations is needed. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, together with confidence in the use of relevant software.

Maternity Cover: This post is fixed-term for 12 months or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.
