University Lecturers

The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy (DMSM) invites applications for two University Lectureships. Candidates across all fields of materials science will be considered but the successful applicant will strengthen and complement existing research fields in the Department, see www.msm.cam.ac.uk

Rated in the last Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) as the top materials department and one of the top UK departments in any science/engineering discipline, DMSM provides an outstanding environment in which to pursue frontier materials research. Candidates are sought in any discipline relevant to materials science who can further enhance DMSM's international research profile, and who will play an active part in curriculum development, teaching and examining at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The Lectureships will be based at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, and laboratory and office space for the appointee and their group will be provided within the Department.

Applicants should have a PhD in materials science (or a cognate discipline), a strong record of relevant research, and must show evidence of enthusiasm and ability to teach a wide range of core materials science topics successfully at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. This work will include the delivery of existing courses, and the development of new teaching materials, lecture courses, examinations, laboratory classes and administration.

The Department is active in promoting policies to address historic underrepresentation of women and minority groups in its workforce. We have an active internal forum on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and are working towards external certification. Candidates from under-represented groups, as well as candidates with a track record in addressing barriers to equality and diversity in education, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications should include: a covering letter, CV, list of publications together with a research proposal (4 pages max), their three most important papers with a brief summary (half page max) of the reasons behind their significance, and an explicit mention of their contribution to that work (in the case of multi-authored papers), and a summary of how you might contribute to Departmental teaching and how they might engage with the subject of materials science more broadly (1 page max).

It is anticipated that shortlisted applicants will be invited to visit Cambridge in late March/early April to give a presentation, for informal discussions and formal interview.

The lectureship is available from 1st June 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
