The University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research and Outreach Associate to design and conduct original research into Islamic art, aesthetics and/or material culture in the Centre of Islamic Studies, to begin in September 2020. The post is a three-year, fixed-term position.
The postdoctoral associate will be involved in researching Arabic and Persian manuscripts in the collections of the University Library and The Fitzwilliam Museum's Founder's Library. Expert knowledge of the two languages and Islamic codicology are, therefore, two essential requisites. Academic projects and publications that stem from this research are expected in the duration of the post. At the Centre of Islamic Studies, we hope to collaborate with colleagues on outreach activities at our partner-institution, the Alwaleed Centre at the University of Edinburgh. A potential collaborative activity could come in the form of a joint exhibition on manuscripts in Cambridge's collections and special collections housed in Edinburgh's University Library.
The post-holder will support and maintain the University's national and international reputation for excellence in research and public engagement. S/he will carry out research at a similar level to that undertaken by lecturing staff; this will provide substantial scope for academic judgement, originality, interpretation and presentation of results. Alongside their research, a central part of the post-holder's role will be to generate innovative public engagement activities, in order to spread a critically informed understanding of their topic beyond the Centre. In order to achieve this, s/he will propose and implement a defined programme of activities in order to raise the profile of their subject and engage communities beyond the bounds of the University. Cambridge is currently developing an Islamic art initiative, which aims to generate new research, establish world-leading partnerships with scholars and institutions across the globe, bring Islamic art collections to life for global audiences, and make new discoveries. The post-holder will be expected to engage closely with the academic champions for this initiative and to contribute to its continued growth and development. The post-holder may also contribute some teaching in the field of their expertise to the appropriate department/faculty, and may assist in the presentation of seminars.
The successful candidate will be expected to apply for additional external research funding.
The successful candidate must have been awarded their PhD or be in the final stages of completion of their PhD by the date of employment. They will demonstrate genuine interest in the work of the Centre of Islamic Studies; and demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and flawless spoken and written English. Applicants should have the right to work in the UK. If you do not have the right to work in the UK already, any offer of employment we make to you will be conditional upon you gaining it. Applicants should send the following material:
