Unestablished University Lecturer in The History of Political Thought, c. 1750-1890 (fixed term - three years)
The Faculty of History is seeking to appoint a temporary University Lecturer in the history of political thought, c. 1750 - c. 1890. Based in central Cambridge, the post will be for three years, from 1 October 2020.
The post-holder will teach at both undergraduate and Masters levels. In particular they will be expected to: contribute to teaching for Part I of the Historical Tripos on Paper 20 (History of Political Thought c. 1700 - c. 1890) in 2020-21 and relevant papers in the new Part I of the Tripos due to be launched in 2021-2. They will contribute to teaching on Part II of the Historical Tripos on Paper 6 (States between States: The History of International Political Thought from the Roman Empire to the Early Nineteenth Century). They will supervise final year undergraduate dissertations; offer modules and supervise individual students in the MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History; and, if necessary, contribute to PhD training courses. Furthermore, the post-holder will be required to examine at all levels and to take their share of Faculty administration.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills; show a commitment to supporting students academically in the Faculty; and be able and ready to participate in collaborative research programmes and in the life of the Faculty and University more generally. The post is especially suited to a specialist in German political thought from Kant to Marx; however, those with expertise in French or British thought in the same period, who can offer excellent teaching in the required area at undergraduate and graduate level, are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should hold, by the start of the appointment, a doctorate in a relevant field and outstanding abilities in teaching and research.
