Senior Research Associate in Long-term Performance Monitoring of Infrastructure (Fixed Term)

Applicants are sought for the post of Senior Research Associate, to establish a research programme in whole-life performance evaluation and monitoring of bridges. This innovative project is funded by the Construction Innovation Hub and will be delivered in collaboration with Network Rail and Microsoft.

The project will demonstrate the practical application of real-time data analytics integrated with digital twins, providing widely accessible usage and structural health monitoring information. The bridges which will form the focal point of the research have been constructed with integrated fibre optic sensor systems, allowing a degree of monitoring not previously possible. The effective analysis and interpretation of this data, and its translation, via the use of digital twins, into information useful to the network operator will be the principal research activity, and the successful candidate will be the day to day lead of this programme.

Experience in structural engineering, programming, an ability to communicate effectively and to work in a team are all important skills. Experience in working with industrial partners on research projects is desirable. It would be advantageous for candidates to have experience with structural health monitoring, data interpretation, and Building Information Modelling (BIM).

The post will be based within the Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology in Division D of the Department of Engineering on the West Cambridge site.

Appointment at Senior Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD and substantial relevant experience at a postdoctoral level.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2021 in the first instance.
