The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK CI) is a department of the University of Cambridge and has the specific goal to harness the scientific strengths of Cambridge to solve problems encountered with the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of cancer.
The Histopathology/ISH Core Facility offers a variety of histological techniques, immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridisation (ISH), laser capture microdissection, as well as automatic slide digitisation and image analysis to CRUK CI scientists.
We are now looking to recruit a highly motivated Senior Scientific Associate to join our busy team of thirteen and contribute to the achievements of our Core Facility. This is a senior histopathology role with line management responsibility and involves responsibility for the day-to-day running of our scanning and image analysis service. This service includes brightfield and fluorescent slide scanning, as well as the use of a variety of image analysis software packages. In addition, the role holder will be responsible for maintaining turnaround times and performing QC for service requests, sample tracking/storage through the scanning area, equipment calibration/maintenance and training of new users and team members.
The successful candidate will be able to work independently but also thrive in a team environment, provide help and advice to users and other team members, and generally contribute to a positive and collaborative atmosphere in the laboratory, as well as within the CI community. They will possess excellent communication and customer service skills, and have the ability to deal confidently and diplomatically with a range of personalities and staff at all levels of seniority. Attention to detail, good organisational skills, previous use of LIMS, knowledge of the Human Tissue Act 2004 and significant experience in histology and tissue recognition are essential. Knowledge or experience of general histology processes, IHC, ISH and tissue microarrays would be beneficial. The candidate will have a Biomedical Science degree or equivalent experience and although line management experience is preferred it is not essential, as training can be provided.
Maternity cover: This post is fixed-term for 14 months or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check.
