IT Specialist (Part Time, Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a part time (0.5 FTE), 18-month fixed-term Technical IT Developer post as part of the research project 'Investigating the diffusion of morphosyntactic innovations using social media'.

The project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and led by David Willis (PI) in collaboration with Adrian Leemann (CI, Lancaster University) and Tam Blaxter (CI, University of Cambridge). The project aims to develop the use of social-media data (e.g. Twitter) for the study of language variation and change, in particular the question of how new linguistic variants vary across and diffuse through geographic space. It is developing new methodologies for collecting and analysing social-media data in language variation and change, and conducting case studies for a series of morphosyntactic variables in three contrasting languages, British English, Norwegian and Welsh.

The successful candidate will be responsible, in collaboration with other team members, for developing linguistic game and survey apps comparable to the English Dialect App (http://englishdialectapp.com/) and for developing an online atlas interface for the data gathered by the project. They will also support other team members in development of data storage and analysis tools. They will have strong server-side scripting skills (PHP, ASP or equivalent), some front-end development experience, and some background in database design (both with relational databases, e.g. MySQL, and non-relational databases, e.g. NoSQL). Previous experience of mobile app and/or web-app development, experience of collaborative team-based working, and/or some background in linguistics or dialectology would be useful.

The closing date for this position is midnight (GMT) on 15 March 2019. Interviews will take place on 25 March 2019. The post is intended to start on 1 April 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter by negotiation with the successful candidate.
