A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on experimental development of a novel kerosene-fuelled spray combustor. The work will revolve around an already-patented design and will involve its alteration to be able to operate with liquid fuels and detailed investigations with laser-based imaging systems. The successful candidate must have experience in spray and turbulent combustion, with special emphasis on laser diagnostics, image processing systems, and burner design and manufacture. This research is supported by the European Commission, Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking.
The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK.
The key responsibilities and duties are to execute research in the field of turbulent spray combustion with focus on gas turbine combustors; to design burners operating with liquid sprays; to perform measurements with laser diagnostic and probe sampling systems; to prepare written descriptions of the work and communicate the results effectively with papers and presentations; and to prepare reports for the sponsor and the partners.
Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in experimental spray combustion, with special emphasis on gas turbine combustion. Requirements: excellent knowledge of combustion laser diagnostics and spray atomisers, deep knowledge of spray combustion fundamentals. The candidate must have excellent writing and presentation skills and must be able to work in a team and must be willing to interface with industry.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,243 - £30,395 Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.
