The Fitzwilliam Museum is the principal museum of the University of Cambridge with designated collections of international importance, a staff of c.200 FTE, and a volunteer workforce of 100+.The Fitzwilliam is also the largest cultural venue in the region, welcoming some 400,000 visitors a year to its permanent galleries, temporary exhibitions and wide-ranging public engagement programme. The Museum has over half a million works of art and antiquities spanning centuries and displays them in 23 galleries.
We are seeking to appoint this role as a permanent position. If you are appointed, your primary focus will be to ensure that the Museum thoroughly records and documents its holdings, transforming access to collections data and related assets for real and virtual visitors, researchers and students. Our aim is to achieve excellence in all our collections information and interpretation practices, policies and procedures, meeting and exceeding Accreditation and other relevant standards and providing an unparalleled research and information resource and service for current and potential users.
You will work with colleagues across the museum to ensure that the Museum's Documentation Policy, Plan and Procedures are fully understood and applied by all those involved in working with collection objects. You will act as a champion for documentation, and for the museum's collections management system, making sure that colleagues are fully trained and skilled in its use. You will work with colleagues to enable the inclusion of collections data within the Museum's internal collections management system (currently Adlib), online and in collaborative projects. You will review the internal workflows for documentation and related activities, and work with colleagues to identify more efficient methods for workflow, data flow and dissemination. You will have a strong understanding of digital, IT and collections management systems, excellent attention to detail and a highly methodical and organised approach. At the same time, you will be an excellent communicator, with the ability to champion the importance of collections management to colleagues from different disciplines, garnering support from across the Museum to achieve the overriding goal of addressing documentation backlogs and getting the collections fully documented and accessible online.
You will work closely with colleagues in the curatorial, conservation, digital and IT and engagement departments of the Museum to ensure an excellent documentation system is implemented and maintained, building upon current infrastructure, for the collection of over 500,000 objects.
You will have extensive experience of working in a collections documentation role within a complex, multi-disciplinary museum, gallery or heritage collection, as well as experience of working with different museum documentation systems, both analogue and digital. Ideally you will also have a degree or equivalent in History of Art, Archaeology or other discipline relevant to the collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum.
