Applications are invited for PhD studentships at the interface of synthetic organic chemistry, high throughput technologies, automated systems for discovery & process chemistry, and machine learning/artificial intelligence. Researchers from the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology, Engineering, and Physics will be involved in this collaborative programme, and individual PhD projects may involve more than one Department.
The projects will also benefit from extensive collaboration with industries, ranging from the pharmaceutical and process research sectors to high-Tech IT and data corporations, who will offer specific expertise relevant to the overarching goal of these PhD projects. Students might spend some time working within a company during their PhD.
Studentships will be 4 years in duration, and will provide a maintenance grant and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Studentships are available to UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements of the Research Councils. Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may be eligible for a fees-only award. Owing to funding restrictions imposed by the sponsor, non-EU citizens cannot be considered.
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class or upper second class honours degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in chemistry, chemical engineering, engineering, or other relevant discipline, and must have an interest in the applications of AI and machine learning to chemical process technologies. Applicants must be highly motivated with excellent interpersonal skills, and have a desire to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment.
