Senior Research Associate (Epigenetic Regulation of Cell Fate Choice and Differentiation) (Fixed Term)

A Senior Research Associate position is currently available for an individual to work with considerable responsibility in the laboratory of Prof. Anna Philpott within the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. The Philpott lab has broad interests in understanding the fundamental mechanisms that determine cell fate choice and differentiation during embryonic development and in cancers, as well as how these processes are co-ordinated with cell cycle progression. In the lab, we use many systems to address these including embryos of the frog Xenopus laevis, embryonic stem cells, cancer cell culture and organoid systems. We also use many techniques including embryo manipulation, genome-wide analysis of gene expression in single and multiple cells, chromatin binding and accessibility studies, CrispR gene knock-out, alongside diverse biochemical approaches.

The Wellcome - MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI) is a world-leading centre for stem cell research with the mission to transform human health through a deep understanding of stem cell biology. The CSCI spans three University Schools (Biological Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Physical Sciences) and heads an Interdisciplinary Research Centre involving two additional Schools (Schools of Technology and Humanities and Social Sciences). CSCI is due to move to the brand new, state of the art Capella building on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in early 2019.

The successful candidate will take a lead in driving forward our scientific programme uncovering epigenetic and co-factor dependent mechanisms of cell fate choice and differentiation in frog embryos and cultured mammalian cells at the level of single cells. Providing scientific leadership within the laboratory of Prof. Anna Philpott, the successful candidate will have considerable scope to set day-to-day research objectives, will work closely with Prof. Philpott to ensure delivery on strategic scientific goals and will also develop and optimise of research projects independently. They will also provide project management, scientific support and training to other team members, including Research Associates, Academic Clinical Fellows, PhD students and Senior/Bioinformatic Analysts.

The successful candidate will have significant responsibility for scientific outputs of the lab including writing and editing publications, undertaking scientific talks and outreach, and grant preparation and monitoring. They will be expected to use their initiative and creativity to solve routine and non-routine problems related to research projects and technical development projects and will also undertake day-to-day management of lab finances and operations, interactions with the core facilities, wider collaborators and represent the Prof. Philpott at senior-level management meetings.

The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent research doctoral degree), considerable post-doctoral experience in developmental biology, epigenetics, molecular biology or a similar field, and a proven track record in scientific publication. Prior experience in developmental models such as Xenopus or zebrafish would be desirable, but not essential. Experience of epigenetics and/or transcriptional regulation are essential, while experience of genome-wide transcriptional analysis and, in particular analysis at the single cell level, would also be an advantage. Applicants must display an ability to undertake project management, work within a multi-disciplinary team environment, have good presentation and communication skills, and the ability to train and coach senior researchers. They will be able to assess, interpret and evaluate outcomes of research and translate knowledge of advances in the subject areas into research activity.
