Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Associate in the research group of Professor Giovanna Mallucci, Associate Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) Centre at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Cambridge UK.
The mission of the UK DRI at the University of Cambridge, led by Professor Mallucci, is to create a collaborative, inter-disciplinary Centre, combining world-leading expertise unique to Cambridge from chemistry, biophysics and structural biology with internationally leading research in the cell biology of neurodegeneration. This environment will enable creative and innovative approaches to the study of neurodegenerative disease and drive a gear change in our scientific understanding. Our focus is on understanding the processes involved in the earliest stages of neurodegenerative disease in order to deliver therapeutic targets with the greatest potential to prevent dementia. The DRI is now expanding to ensure that our excellent basic science can be translated in to treatments for patients. To this end a new translational neuroscience group has been created within the DRI to start clinical studies in patient groups.
The Mallucci lab is renowned for paradigm-shifting insights into fundamental mechanisms in neurodegeneration that provide new targets for treatments of these disorders (eg. Moreno et al; Nature 2012 and Sci Trans Med 2013; Halliday et al; Brain 2015 and Peretti et al; Nature 2015).
We are now looking for a Clinical Research Associate that will lead the delivery of cutting-edge investigations into measuring cerebral protein synthesis (CPS) rates using 11C-leucine positron emission tomography (PET) in dementia patients. The post holder be responsible for the co-organisation of the studies, recruitment and assessment of participants (clinical, cognitive, and brain imaging) and data analysis, gaining expertise in advanced imaging analysis. Appropriate clinical work in relevant patient groups can be made available for candidates wishing to maintain clinical skills.
This post could provide the basis for registering for a higher degree (PhD or MD). The successful applicant requires a medical qualification MRCP or equivalent.
A graduate degree in neuroscience (or related discipline), or research experience, would be an advantage (but is not essential), together with a keen interest in dementia, excellent interpersonal and organisational skills. A contribution to academic seminars, public engagement, and the broader success of the department/faculty is expected, as appropriate
