We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the development of an in vitro model system to study human gastrulation within the Research Group of Professor Alfonso Martinez Arias in the Department of Genetics.
The aim of the project is to extrapolate a novel Embryonic Stem Cell (ESC) based organoid system that we have developed in mouse to human ESCs, to enable the study of the early stages of post-implantation human development, in particular the process of gastrulation. The work builds on our finding that when a defined small number of mouse ESCs are aggregated in suspension and differentiated under controlled culture conditions, they undergo symmetry breaking, germ layer specification and patterned gene expression in a manner that mimics events in the embryo (see PMID: 25371360 and 28951435).
The work will suit a researcher who holds, or is about to be awarded, a PhD in molecular genetics or stem cell biology. Experience with human or mouse embryonic stem cells is essential and molecular biology, specifically with CRISPR/Cas9 desirable.
