Research Assistant/Associate in Speech Processing (Fixed Term)

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate to work with Prof. Mark Gales, ALTA Institute, Department of Engineering, on automatic systems to assess and give feedback on the spoken English of non-native learners. The role will initially focus on non-native speech recognition working with challenging data from deployments "in the wild". The post holder will help to support and maintain the University's national and international reputation for excellence in research.

A first degree in a relevant discipline and a PhD degree (or about to be awarded PhD degree) in an area related to speech technology is required. Expertise is sought in (one or more of) the following areas: machine learning; acoustic or language modelling for speech recognition; spoken language assessment or assessment technology; non-native speech or language modelling. A good knowledge of speech tools such as HTK or Kaldi, and/or general deep-learning tools such as TensorFlow is expected.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Salary Ranges:
Research Assistant: £25,728 - £30,688 Research Associate: £31,604 - £38,833

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2020 in the first instance.
