Under the guidance of the Director, you will manage the delivery of academic learner support services based in and around the John Trim self-access language learning centre. You will lead a small team responsible for the delivery of an expert learner advisory service and for the development and maintenance of language teaching and learning resources appropriate to the Language Centre's aims and the needs of end users. The John Trim Centre houses resources in more than 180 languages and the Advising Team support the learning of 35-40 languages per year, notably by researchers preparing for fieldwork.
You will personally deliver language learning advice sessions one-to-one or in small groups to students and staff of the University, following a pedagogic model of supported independent and resource-based learning. You will implement and further develop systems for the analysis, documentation, cataloguing and maintenance of the specialist, multimedia resources. You will also work to promote the John Trim Centre and the Language Centre as a whole to potential and existing language learners within the University.
With a first degree in languages and/or linguistics, and a postgraduate qualification in education or applied linguistics (or with equivalent experience), you will have knowledge of theories of second language acquisition; the development of learner autonomy, learning approaches and learner strategies; first-hand experience of working with language learners in either a classroom or individual context; and highly tuned interpersonal skills gained in student-facing contexts such as teaching or the provision of pastoral care. You will also have experience of managing a small team and be a highly competent IT user, including the use of databases and online data systems.
