The University of Cambridge seeks to appoint two part-time (60%) Research Fellows (RFs) at the Centre for Business Research in central Cambridge for a project "The employment dosage: How much work is needed for health and wellbeing?" situated within sociological, psychological and interdisciplinary literatures. The Principal Investigator is Dr Brendan Burchell, (Sociology, Cambridge). The two other Co-Investigators are Dr Adam Coutts (Sociology, Cambridge) and Dr Daiga Kamerade (University of Salford) The aim is to investigate the dosage of paid work needed to maintain health and wellbeing. This has a variety of societal and policy implications given the possibility of a future in which machine learning and robotics take over many jobs, bringing about a radical reduction in the normal working week. The successful candidates will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment, and collaborate with scholars and policy makers. RF1 (Quantitative) will primarily analyse large datasets. Dr Kamerade will be using datasets such as the UK Household Longitudinal Study and the European Working Conditions Survey to better understand the relationship between short working hours and wellbeing. Dr Coutts has been involved in the RCT evaluations of back-to-work interventions and analysing the qualitative and quantitative data from those trials. RF1 is expected to possess advanced quantitative skills, experience in dealing with large datasets, and in using software such as R, SPSS, or STATA. Experience of multilevel and longitudinal data analysis methods is highly desirable, otherwise a willingness to learn these techniques is essential.
Post RF2 (Qualitative) will primarily research non-traditional individuals and sub-cultures who already work reduced hours, for instance to prioritise activities such as sport or voluntary work. There will also be some semi-structured interviews for the back-to-work studies. RF2 should have experience of qualitative research methods.
There are plenty of opportunities for training and personal development within these posts, as well as some flexibility over hours of work and duration of contract. There may be opportunities for paid teaching.
Both RFs are also expected to participate in running the project through administration, social media, conferences and workshops. There will be collaborations and cross-overs between the two research fellowships, giving both the chance to extend their skill-set. Both RFs will also be encouraged to author and co-author publications, policy briefings and/or media articles.
You must have a completed a PhD or be near to completing a PhD. You should have evidence of original research work in political economy, social epidemiology, psychology and/or sociology.
