The Cambridge Image Analysis group (CIA) in collaboration with the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Faculty of Classics and Hamilton Kerr Institute in Cambridge are seeking strong candidates for a Research Associate position to work on a collaborative project between applied mathematics, art conservation and art history, and classical archaeology. The post holder will be employed by the University of Cambridge. The primary base will be The Fitzwilliam Museum but significant time will also be spent at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics Hamilton Kerr Institute and Faculty of Classics. The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance. Confirmation of the role holder's appointment will be subject to formal approval by the Trust.
The research activity of the successful candidate will focus on the development of image and shape analysis and processing methods for applications in the virtual restoration of illuminated manuscripts, the analysis of paint, and the analysis and classification of Roman pottery. Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. He or she must be able to communicate material of a technical nature to non-technical people and be able to build internal and external contacts. He or she may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area. An allowance for research expenses is included in this position.
Applicants must have (or about to receive) a PhD degree in mathematics or statistics (or a closely related discipline), and have a demonstrably excellent research record and future research potential. The ideal candidate will have experience in image analysis, in particular in one or more of the following: image restoration, image classification, shape analysis and in machine learning.
