Research Assistant, Light Microscopy Core Facility

The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK CI) is a department of the University of Cambridge with 430 staff situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. It is supported with generous core funding from Europe's top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK. Since it opened in 2007, the Institute has established a reputation for international excellence in cancer research, in collaboration with clinicians and researchers across academia and industry. The Institute's research ranges from basic experimental and computational cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The CRUK CI is a state-of-the-art research institute where the 12 scientific core facilities perform a fundamental role in supporting scientific research.

We are seeking a Scientific Research Assistant to join the light microscopy core facility. This is an exciting opportunity for a junior light microscopist to apply and develop their skills supporting advanced light microscopy at one of the premier cancer research institutes in Europe. The CI's state-of-the-art imaging core facility hosts a broad range of imaging techniques including confocal microscopy, 2-photon/intra-vital microscopy, spinning disc and light-sheet microscopy, as well as super-resolution (STED) imaging and image analysis platforms.

The core responsibilities of the role will be to ensure that microscopes within the facility are well maintained and to train users to set up and use the microscopes correctly. The role holder will also be responsible for instrument QC, effective image data management within the facility as well as being involved in providing researchers with experimental design and image analysis support.

There will also be opportunities to develop new skills with high-end equipment and on custom build systems and assist in developing applications and imaging technologies of benefit to the Institute.

An ideal candidate will be highly organised with a flexible and cooperative approach to working. Applicants will be able to demonstrate broad practical skills in imaging and the ability to troubleshoot microscope problems and effectively liaise with vendors. Experience with either commercial or open-access image analysis software (e.g. Fiji, Imaris, Arivis) is highly desirable. Applicants will ideally have a degree in biological sciences and experience of working in a research laboratory. Experience in teaching or training users and a background in working in a core facility/service lab would be highly desirable. Knowledge in cell and molecular biology is not essential but beneficial.

Enthusiasm for microscopy and excellent communication skills are essential. Team working is crucial, as the post holder will work closely with a small team of imaging experts.

The post is full-time but applications are welcome from those who would like to work flexibly.
