Research Assistant/Associate (Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

The Institute of Astronomy (IoA) at the West Cambridge site expects to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to work on the Milky Way Galaxy and data from the Gaia satellite.

The Milky Way research involves mapping out the dark matter in the Galaxy, reconstructing the assembly history of the Galaxy through observational work involving large scale surveys, as well as theoretical studies with numerical simulations and galactic dynamics. Candidates with expertise in astro-particle physics, galactic astronomy and dynamics, spectroscopy and numerical simulations are all encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will be expected to develop a high degree of interaction with the faculty, postdoctoral researchers and research students; to conduct a highly competitive programme of scientific research, prepare proposals to secure research resources (for example, access to high performance computing, large telescopes, or other international facilities) and write scientific articles for publication in peer reviewed journals. Applicants must have excellent communication and computing skills.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field (appointed at Research Associate grade, £31,604 to £38,833 p.a.) or be near to completion (appointed at Research Assistant grade, £25,728 to £30,688). The primary criteria for selection will be based on research excellence in observational and/or theoretical astronomy as detailed above.
